We were delighted by the swift and overwhelming response to a Rapid Action Network bulletin last month, in support of the Sudanese journalist Abeer Awooda.
Abeer had been seeking asylum in the UK, after she was attacked and tortured in Sudan for writing articles critical of the government, and for wearing trousers in public. The UK Border Agency attempted to deport her back to the Sudan.
Waging Peace, a Human Rights NGO asked for help in appealing to Home Secretary Teresa May, and were very grateful for the high response from PEN members. As a result of your appeals, Abeer was granted a stay of deportation while her case is examined by the European Court of Human Rights. She has also been released from the Yarls Wood detention centre.
